Conservation Projects

Over the last couple of years, I have enjoyed supporting various nature conversation projects with software support.

MigrantWatch
MigrantWatch is a citizen science programme of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, in association with Indian Birds journal where participants keep a regular watch for one or more migratory species in places where they live, work, or visit regularly, and note the dates of first and last sighting during the migration season. This can help us understand the changes occurring in migratory patterns in India. I developed the website for the project and have been interested in various outreach aspects of the project. The project has been running successfully for the last 5 years. Visit http://migrantwatch.in
SeasonWatch
SeasonWatch is a citizen volunteer network that monitors the seasons as revealed by trees. Participants document the timing of flowering, fruiting and leaf-flush of roughly 100 tree species, and explore how this timing may be changing as the climate changes. I designed the website for the project and have also been involved with the outreach component of the project. Visit http://seasonwatch.in
EclipseWatch
This was another citizen science project where a total of 100 volunteers from 30 cities across India tracked the behaviour of common birds and animals like crows, sparrows, geckos and dogs in response to the eclipse. By comparing animal behaviour at different localities across the subcontinent, each of which experienced the eclipse at different times with different magnitudes, we hoped to better understand how animals respond to an eclipse. Bibliography of South Asian Ornithology
This website contains bibliography that has been compiled over the course of 30 years by Aasheesh Pittie. It spans three centuries of South Asian ornithology commencing from 1713. This project was undertaken as part of OpenEcology project, an initiative to encourage open access of Indian ecological data. Visit http://southasiaornith.in
Student Conference on Conservation Science(SCCS)
The Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) – Bangalore brings together young researchers in conservation science to facilitate interaction, encourage exchange of research ideas and methods, and help build contacts and capacity. As a sister conference to SCCS-Cambridge, and SCCS-New York, SCCS-Bangalore focuses on attracting students primarily from countries in South and South-east Asia. Visit http://sccs-bng.org
Nature Conservation Foundation Jackal Survey
This survey was launched to understand the distribution and conservation status of Golden Jackals about which very little is known. Participants were asked to fill in simple online questionnaire on when and where they had/have been seeing jackals. Visit http://conservation.in/jackal
